'Golden Thunder'
'Golden Thunder'
'The moving multitude darkened the whole plains...' wrote Lewis and Clark. Watching these mighty migrants roam this valley splattered in gold, you can understand why. Once numbering 30 - 60 million in America, bison numbers at the end of the 1800s declined to just over 1,000, thanks to hunting and the loss of habitat. Numbers have now recovered to roughly 300,000. This is the last remaining wild herd in North America.
